The Eugene and Ruth Roberts Summer Student Academy is a highly selective, research intensive summer program hosted by City of Hope that provides high school and undergraduate students with hands on experience in biomedical science. Over the course of about ten weeks, participants are placed in professional research laboratories where they work full time alongside scientists, physicians, and graduate researchers on original projects in areas such as cancer biology, genomics, and related fields. Rather than following a fixed curriculum, students are matched with labs based on their interests and are encouraged to design and pursue their own research questions while receiving close mentorship. In addition to lab work, the program includes seminars, workshops, and opportunities to present findings through talks and poster sessions, helping students develop scientific communication and professional skills. The academy emphasizes real world research, critical thinking, and collaboration, giving participants an experience similar to that of early stage researchers and preparing them for future studies and careers in biomedical science.
