The Hansen Leadership Institute (HLI) is an international leadership development program that brings together high school students from regions of conflict around the world to promote peace and cooperation. Over the course of three intensive weeks, participants (known as Fellows) receive training in ethical leadership, public speaking, mediation, conflict resolution, and human rights activism. Fellows live alongside peers from different nations and warring regions, building deep cross-cultural friendships through a 24/7 residential experience unlike anything available in a traditional school setting. HLI is one of the most meaningful and transformative opportunities a high school student can pursue.
Delivering ideas clearly and confidently in front of an audience.
Helping people work through disagreements and find a fair way forward.
Guiding a group toward a shared goal and keeping everyone moving together.
Understanding and respectfully engaging with people from different backgrounds.
Speaking up and taking action on behalf of a cause or group of people.
Setting long-term goals and mapping out the steps to reach them.
Fellows train in international cooperation, cross-cultural communication, and peacemaking across zones of conflict.
Program develops principled leadership and strategic thinking for addressing global peace and conflict resolution.
Fellows engage in community building, restorative justice training, and long-term international advocacy projects.
HLI provides training in mediation, conflict resolution, and human rights expertise central to legal practice.
