The High School Fellowship in Biomedical Research is a four-week summer internship offered by The Wistar Institute, one of the world's leading biomedical research centers, open to students aged 16 and older. Fellows work Monday through Thursday in a state-of-the-science training lab, learning professional laboratory techniques while contributing to real, active research projects. Students also develop skills in reading scientific literature, explore careers in biomedical research, and present their findings at a program showcase. Fellows who complete the program receive a $1,500 stipend and SEPTA passes for transportation, making this one of the most rewarding and accessible research opportunities available to high school students.
Running experiments safely and accurately using real scientific equipment and procedures.
Designing studies, testing hypotheses, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
Gathering and evaluating information systematically to answer a question.
Evaluating information carefully before drawing a conclusion or making a decision.
Breaking down a challenge and working through it methodically to a solution.
Delivering ideas clearly and confidently in front of an audience.
Students conduct hands-on biomedical research in active lab projects, directly mirroring medical researcher work.
Immersive training in biomedical laboratory techniques and state-of-the-science equipment builds core biomedical engineering skills.
Exposure to biomedical research and cancer research careers helps students explore medicine-adjacent scientific pathways.
Students learn to read scientific literature and present research findings, foundational skills for academic careers.
Four-week immersion in laboratory techniques and active biomedical science projects builds practical biology skills.
