The Avogadro Chemistry Exam is an annual online competition administered by the University of Waterloo's Department of Chemistry, open to Grade 11 and 12 students at accredited high schools around the world. Since 1988, students have tested their chemistry knowledge through a standardized 40 question multiple-choice exam completed within 75 minutes. Teachers register their eligible students in mid-February, and participants have the opportunity to earn Certificates of Distinction and measure themselves against chemistry students globally. It is an excellent opportunity for advanced chemistry students to challenge themselves and gain recognition for their academic achievement.
Designing studies, testing hypotheses, and drawing evidence-based conclusions.
Evaluating information carefully before drawing a conclusion or making a decision.
Breaking down a challenge and working through it methodically to a solution.
Running experiments safely and accurately using real scientific equipment and procedures.
Students test chemistry knowledge directly through a specialized exam competition administered by a university chemistry department.
Competition assesses foundational chemistry principles essential to understanding chemical processes and industrial applications.
Rigorous chemistry knowledge from this exam builds a strong foundation for pharmaceutical and biomedical research.
High performance in this internationally-recognized exam demonstrates mastery suitable for advanced chemistry study and teaching.
