The La Brea Tar Pits Volunteer Program offers high school students the opportunity to contribute to one of the most unique active paleontological research institutions in the country, located in the heart of Los Angeles. The program features two main pathways: Interpretive Volunteers engage museum visitors with hands-on exhibits and Ice Age artifacts, while Behind-the-Scenes Volunteers assist with real fossil research in the laboratory and at excavation sites. Both pathways provide students with rare, direct experience in paleontology and museum science. This free, year-round program is an exceptional opportunity for students passionate about science, history, and public education.
