International Linguistics Olympiad

Annual competition

The International Linguistics Olympiad (IOL) is an annual international competition where secondary school students analyze the grammar, structure, culture, and history of languages through logic-based puzzles and problem-solving challenges. Founded in 2003, the IOL is hosted in a different country each year and draws talented teams from dozens of nations and territories around the world. Unlike many academic competitions, no prior linguistics experience is required, making it accessible to any student with strong logical reasoning, patience, and creative thinking skills. It is one of the most distinctive and globally recognized competitions available to high school students with a passion for language and problem-solving.
