The INSIGHT High School Program at the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center is a selective summer program designed to introduce high school students to public health, medicine, and biomedical research through hands on, collaborative learning. Hosted by the University of Washington, the program focuses specifically on injury and violence prevention, giving students insight into how research can be used to improve health outcomes and address real world problems. Over the course of about four weeks, participants engage in interactive seminars, group research projects, and skill building workshops that cover topics such as data analysis, public speaking, and scientific communication. Students work together on a capstone project centered on a public health issue, applying research methods and presenting their findings at a final symposium. The program also emphasizes themes of health equity and social justice, helping students understand how societal factors impact community health. Through mentorship, speaker panels, and collaborative activities, participants gain exposure to careers in healthcare and public health while developing critical thinking and research skills. Overall, the program provides an accessible introduction to scientific research and the role of public health in preventing injuries and improving lives.
