The picoCTF competition is a free, online cybersecurity contest created by Carnegie Mellon University that introduces students to hacking concepts through a capture the flag format. Designed especially for middle school, high school, and early college students, participants solve a series of interactive challenges that require skills such as cryptography, reverse engineering, web exploitation, and digital forensics. Rather than traditional testing, the competition gamifies learning by having students “capture flags” hidden within problems, encouraging creative thinking and hands on problem solving. picoCTF is open to beginners as well as more experienced participants, with challenges that increase in difficulty over time, and it serves as both a learning platform and a competitive event. Held annually, typically in March, the competition lasts around ten days and is considered one of the largest cybersecurity competitions in the world, reaching hundreds of thousands of learners and helping introduce them to real world cybersecurity skills.
