Annual competition

National History Day is an annual academic competition that challenges students in grades 6 through 12 to conduct in-depth historical research and present their findings through one of five project formats: exhibits, documentaries, performances, papers, or websites. Each year, participants explore a unifying historical theme and develop original, research-driven projects that are judged on historical quality, clarity of argument, and relation to the theme. Top entries advance from school-level competitions through regional and affiliate contests, with the strongest projects earning a spot at the National Contest held each June at the University of Maryland. It is one of the most rigorous and rewarding history-focused competitions available to middle and high school students, offering a genuine opportunity to develop research, writing, and critical thinking skills.
